Singing in the rain…or maybe not

This morning’s commute was sodden (there’s really no other way of putting it) and I was amazed at how many women were wearing delicate summer shoes. Don’t misunderstand me, this wasn’t a light shower or a sudden onslaught...it had been raining heavily all night, the sky was full of lightening, and there was a crash of thunder every few minutes. To put it in the vernacular, it was pissing down.

Yet the bus was full of women with pale colored, fabric shoes which looked decidedly the worse for wear. And the thing is, it was so unnecessary...after all, there are plenty of waterproof options out there. Not since the 80’s (or perhaps, more recently, a fetish party) has there been this much plastic footwear...the “jelly” shoe...even, God help me, the Croc...it made me want to ask, you really couldn’t find anything marginally utilitarian? Did it really seem more aesthetically pleasing to have your shoes act as a sponge and soak up as much dirty city water as possible?

In case you’re curious, yes, I am saying this as a slightly smug woman with dry feet...thanks to some black rubber pixie boots.
